To decide the scope of the natural conservation in Beidagang Wetland of Tianjin, a special forum was hosted both online and offline. Officials from various departments, local volunteers, and delegates from CBCGDF and many other funds, participated in the meeting.

The spokesperson from the water authority reported that while enlarging the water-supply project for household water-consumption, the local government will also pay much attention to ecological demand, including setting buffer zones, building artificial floating islands, to reduce negative ecological influence.

Representatives said that there is a conflicting issue on the right of administrative control between provincial conservation work and international protection work for important rivers. Though certain ecological problems such as salination in reservoirs has been noticed by participants, what is more important is to deal with this management conflict.

The Research Department of CBCGDF mainly focuses on the change of the conservation scope in Beidagang Wetland, saying that the exact data of this scope should be directly linked to the conservation’s real ecological functions. That is to say, the area that can guarantee the regular ecological operation should be the final answer to this adjustment. Only when scientists and environmental officials do a thorough ecological evaluation of this conservation, can we have a clear and scientific plan on determining the scope of the conservation in Beidagang. For instance, natural functions can include movements of migratory birds, wild plants, and insects. Relevant departments are supposed to do more profound ecological risk evaluation reports pertaining this concern, thus minimizing the negative impact from human activities upon wetland ecology.

As for more ideas presented by other parties, Tianjin authority responded to each of them respectively, decided to give more emphasis on suggestions from social organizations, and push forward to compile an official report on ecological risk and engineering projects. They promised that this move would be under supervision and arranged strictly according to administrative regulations.
